Literally just a few minutes ago – a SECOND Tory MP with the wonderful name of Mark Reckless has announced that he is resigning from parliament and will stand for UKIP in the subsequent by-election.

Reckless is in the riding or district of Rochester and Strood and here’s the report from the BBC and here is ITV news.

Conservative backbencher Mark Reckless said he is defecting to Ukip because he “found that it is impossible” to keep promises he gave to his voters as a Conservative.

“I remember the promises I made to my constituents in Rochester and Strood at the last election, and I intend to keep them,” Mr Reckless said.

“I found that it’s impossible to keep these promises as Conservative and that is why I am joining Ukip,” he said.

The Rochester and Strood MP said he had not taken the decision lightly but claimed the Conservative leadership was “part of the problem that is holding our country back”.

More from the BBC:

Delegates started to spontaneously chant “UKIP, UKIP” when Mr Reckless announced his decision to defect, which he said was not easy.

***Appearing on stage to a rapturous reception at the conference, he said: “Today I am leaving the Conservative party and joining UKIP.”

This is exciting news!  There may be more to come if this prior report is accurate:

One potential defector is said to be a Tory MP who is to stand down at next year’s general election and would sit for Ukip for the next seven months. The other is said to be a Tory currently planning to run again in 2015.

Likely Ukip targets include Chris Kelly and Brian Binley, two right-wingers who have announced that they are standing down as MPs. Others thought to be have been identified by Ukip as potential targets are Gordon Henderson, Mark Reckless and Martin Vickers.

Reckless does not fit into the first scenario but could be the second one.  However, it means that another by-election will be held probably in November and UKIP ought to be favo(u)red in this one as well.  Could be more excitement!
